Situated 60 km North of Beijing, Huairou is an increasingly popular weekend destination for the Beijingers. New Ground was asked to design a resort on the slope of a mountain surrounded by lakes and portions of the Great Wall.
The program includes an orchard, a restaurant, an office building, a small club, 33 villas and, in a second phase, a hotel.
At the entrance of the resort, a long timber-clad restaurant building is raised on a dark stone-and-concrete base over a stream, its saw-tooth roof opening tall windows toward the orchard and hills, with a terrace of umbrellas stepping down to the water below.
Nearby, the office building wraps a two-storey stone volume in a folded roof, its upper floor screened behind a veil of weathered steel fins along a tree-lined avenue.
Deeper inside the 33 villas are divided in 3 typologies with several distinct forms across the slope — from simple assembly of brick cubes set directly on the grass to a curved, cantilevered villa that lifts a dark timber volume on a glazed, reception area overlooking the hillside, its interiors opening onto views of the orchard, all totally integrated into the mountain slope.
